Cable & Motor Replacement

Boat lift cable and motor replacement

Cables and motors are the parts of a boat lift that wear out most often. Replacing them before they fail is cheaper and safer than dealing with a lift that drops or stalls with the boat on it.

Covered under cable & motor replacement

  • Stainless steel lift cable replacement
  • Cable drum and winder shaft service
  • Lift motor replacement
  • Gearbox replacement
  • Capacitor, switch and remote replacement
  • Limit switch install and adjustment

When lift cables should be replaced

Replace cables when you see broken strands, kinks, flattening, rust bleeding from inside the cable or a cable that has jumped the drum. Cables also stretch over time, which can make the cradle lift unevenly. Many technicians recommend replacing all lift cables at the same time so they wear evenly.

Signs of a failing motor or gearbox

  • The motor hums but the lift doesn’t move
  • The motor runs hot, smells burnt or trips the breaker or GFCI
  • Grinding, clicking or squealing from the gearbox
  • The lift creeps down when stopped
  • Oil leaking from the gearbox

A humming motor is sometimes a failed start capacitor rather than a dead motor, which is why a proper diagnosis matters before replacing parts.

Matching parts to your lift

Replacement cables must match the drum, pulleys and lift capacity. Motors and gearboxes must match the lift’s voltage, mounting and gear ratio. If you know the lift brand and model, include it in your request. If not, photos of the motor plate and drum help.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace one cable or all of them?

If one cable has failed from age, the others have seen the same wear. Many technicians recommend replacing them as a set, but your estimate should explain the condition of each.

Can I upgrade my motor or add a remote?

Often, yes. Remote kits and replacement motors are available for many lifts. Ask about it in your request.
